History

The town of Sabinas Hidalgo, Nuevo Leon was officially founded on July 25, 1693 by General Ignacio de Maya with the name of Real Santiago de las Sabinas.

On March 23, 1829, the former Real was elevated to village with the name Villa de Santiago de Sabinas Hidalgo, the name stuck until 1971 when it was built in town with the name of Sabinas Hidalgo.

The first settler of this land on 1692 was the lawyer Francisco de la Calancha y Valenzuela, priest and commissioner of the Holy Office of the Inquisition, and his brother Pedro of the same name, who received a grant covering from the Sierra Picachos to south side of the Sabinas River.

The economy was based on agriculture, livestock, but especially in metal smelting mines of Real y Minas de San Pedro de Boca de Leones, Villaldama today, and to a lesser extent mine located within the municipal boundaries.

Economic growth in Sabinas Hidalgo in the last century began thanks to the construction of the Mexico-Nuevo Laredo highway between 1926 and 1936 through this town, which was not contemplated, but was achieved through the efforts of several sabinenses to the Presidency of the Republic.

In 1934, the garment industry, which gave him a reputation nationally and internationally to town, become known as "the Capital of Dress in Mexico", unfortunately, globalization, among other factors led to its decline, but continues as a thriving industry.

Today, the principal economic activity es the commerce.
