Physical geography
Geology
Geologically the township consists of sediments of the Mesozoic era, more precisely the upper and middle Cretaceous. This was the era when dinosaurs dominated the earth, but nevertheless, there are no dinosaur fossils found in Sabinas Hidalgo, since at that time the town was at the bottom of a shallow sea, thus, fossils from this period found in the town belong to molluscs, mainly ammonites. Among the fossils of recent geologic past (quaternary period) have found remains of mammoth, camel and timber.
Soil
In the study area is dominated by so-called chestnut brown soils (xerosoles) from both alluvial and colluvial origin and with a depth ranging from shallow to deep clay loam with some sites mainly sandy loam texture and an average permeability. May also be found the called lithosols soils at the top of the mountain ranges and peaks of the Iguana and Picachos.
